Me! My good bloggy friend Miss Welcome, from Perfect Welcome, tagged me with a meme. My blog is a pretty quiet place, therefore, I tend to fly under the meme radar. So, here goes nothing…
What experience has most shaped you, and why?
Motherhood has most shaped me. I feel as though my life before children was akin to a black and white, silent film. After having kids, that film became a blockbuster action film with a thundering soundtrack. As a mother, all of my emotions have become stronger, deeper, and sharper. My kids drive me absolutely crazy at times (like today!), but the love I feel makes my heart swell.
Another experience that shaped my life was my younger son’s diagnosis as severely hard of hearing. No relatives on either side were deaf, so we were surprised by the diagnosis. We were further shocked by the negative reactions from family members who should have been supportive. The tree that is my mothering grew another root system when I became my son’s advocate within the school system and the medical community. I am a naturally shy and quiet person, but I didn’t have the luxury of timidity while fighting for services.
If you had a whole day with no commitments, what would you do?
I would go for a bike ride. Then I would go shopping at Anthropologie, Sephora, and Whole Foods, followed by a movie. On the way home, I would buy a coke slurpee.
What food or drink could you never give up?
We all know the answer to that one right?? I’ve quit countless times, but the cravings always get too strong.
If you could travel anywhere, where would that be and why?
I would love to travel to Ireland. My Irish friends describe the weather as “cold and damp.” Sounds ideal to one who grew up in hot and dry San Diego.
Who do you have a crush on?
Mr.Mayhem.
If you were leader of your country, what would you do?
I would never aspire to be the leader of my country. The scope of this question is too large to answer completely. However, one small change I would make is to require ALL health insurance companies to pay for quality digital hearing aids for all minors.
Give me one easy savoury recipe that doesn’t include cheese.
I have none. I live for cheese.
What did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
I thought I would be a famous writer or an English teacher. Now my goals have changed. I don’t know what I want to be (whenever I do decide to grow up), but I do know that I want to be something. Oh, and I want to be good at it.
If you could spend just one day in someone else’s body, who would it be?
I would like to spend a day as a surgeon, but the logistics are a nightmare. Imagine the disaster of performing surgery with no training!
Which woman writer – living or dead – do you most admire and why?
I admire Toni Morrison. I enjoy her thought-provoking books.
What character trait inspires you the most?
Honesty, given in a kind, supportive, and considerate way.

I miss Coke Slurpees. I don’t understand why they don’t make them with Diet Coke or Coke Zero. A diabetic just can’t suck back that much sugar. So sad.
I love all kind of music, but the music that always gets me grooving is 80s pop music. It’s in my blood.

COKE SLURPEES??
Love your answer about the cheese. I agree. Life is not…life without cheese!
This is great, and like the others said it was fun to learn more about you. I was struck most by your experience with your son’s diagnosis. It must be so hurtful to have the negative reaction from some relatives – I cannot understand how family cannot show support. But how amazing you are to fight for your son especially given your shyness. I understand on some level how that is…I have never been a vocal person but since becoming a mom I feel that I have had to rise to the challenge.
Thanks for tagging me – it’ll be fun to work on these questions!

Great answers – I love your first one about what has most shaped you and how you describe the before and after, may the soundtrack of motherhood be ever more wonderful for you.
As for Ireland it is actually a much milder climate than most of Europe and yes it does rain a lot but not as much as people make out it does. The downside is that a really “hot” summer day means temperatures in the low 70′s and the sea is always freezing cold, I have seen people wear wet suits in the height of summer just to be able to stomach the cold. But Ireland is lovely, so I hope one day you go get to visit.
Mother hood shapes us all.
And yes, ALL our goals have changed. I was going to cure cancer. Now I will settle for getting the kids through puberty alive.

I love that, despite your shyness and introverted nature, you’ve spoken up to advocate for your son. Motherhood gives us strength we never knew we had, doesn’t it?
